Learning how to roll a joint is fundamental to enjoying cannabis quickly and conveniently, but the practice takes a bit of time to master. There are many competing schools of thought when deciding the best way on how to roll a joint, with the tools, materials, and techniques differing for each.
Whichever method, tools, or materials you end up using, ensuring your joint burns smoothly and evenly is the primary objective. Today, we’re going to show you how to prepare one of the most quintessential products of the cannabis world.
How Much Weed is in a Joint?
The amount of cannabis you choose to include in your joint depends on a variety of factors.
The type of rolling paper you decide to use, the amount of cannabis you have on hand, and of course, your personal preference. Your average joint will contain anywhere from 0.5 to 1 whole gram of weed. Smaller amounts are possible, but lower amounts risk compromising the joint’s structural integrity.
As a reference, the majority of joints available at online dispensaries will be from 0.5 to 1 grams.
Once you master the art of the roll, you’ll be able to roll joints with king-sized and other large rolling papers to accommodate as little or as much weed as you’d like.
How to Roll a Joint Using Your Hands
Using your hands to learn how to roll a joint is the most tried and trued method, and for obvious reasons. The only things you’ll need are your hands, some rolling papers, some optional filters, and some quality cannabis.
Start by preparing your rolling essentials:
- Rolling papers
- Quality cannabis
- Pen, pencil, or anything else that can be used to pack a joint
Step 1) Grind Your Weed
Before you start rolling a joint, you need to make sure your weed is fine enough to fit into the joint itself. Using a weed grinder to prepare your weed is best practice, but you can use scissors or even a knife if you’re in a pinch.
Ensure your grind is not too coarse and not too fine. Too coarse, and it won’t burn evenly – too fine, and you’ll inhale it through your filter.
Step 2) Prepare your crutch/filter.
While many prefer to avoid using a filter or a crutch altogether, we think that one helps to stabilize the joint’s structure and shape immensely.
You can either purchase a pack of filters at your local headshop or dispensary or create one yourself out of any thin, semi-firm piece of paper. Business cards, post-it notes, and even a piece of thin cardboard will work phenomenally.
To make a filter, make sure the piece of paper you have is long and thin and about as wide as you’d like your filter to be. From there, make an accordion fold, so the paper looks like a “w” when looked at. Once you have your accordion roll, roll up the piece of paper until it resembles a cylinder. Maintain this shape and keep on hand for the next step.
Step 3) Fill Your Rolling Paper With Weed
Take a sheet of your rolling paper and make sure the glued edge is facing towards you. The glue side of the paper should have a slight reflectiveness to it.
Insert your filter on one end and cradle the rolling paper and crutch between your thumb and index finger. Ensure you have a firm grasp on the paper so it won’t collapse in on itself once you begin filling it with weed. From there, slowly begin to fill your joint with weed. Ensure the cannabis is evenly distributed and use your other free hand to shape and pack the joint into a cylinder.
Step 4) Roll it Up
With your joint packed, it’s time to roll it up.
Hold onto the joint with your hands, use your tongue to lick and wet the glued edge. Use your hands to continually shape the joint between your hands into a cylinder shape before tucking the unglued edge into the inside of the glue edge. Roll the joint until it’s in a cylindrical shape and seal it with your hands.
Beginning the tuck at your crutch is helpful since the filter will provide some foundation for your joint.
Step 5) Pack it Up and Seal it Away.
Once your joint is rolled, you might have some space at the top of your joint. Please take this opportunity to top it off and use a pen, pencil, or similarly shaped object to pack your joint down. Take care not to push down too much, as this might affect the quality of your burn.
