Most of us recognize the strain name, but that’s about it. There is a rich history behind this strain, including a real person who was named Jack Herer.

You may have heard about his book, “The Emperor Wears No Clothes,” but beyond that, many casual cannabis users won’t have any knowledge of his legacy or his involvement in cannabis activism.

Jack Herer is a man who deserves credit for evolving beyond dogma and reinvigorating both his life and the cannabis movement.

As posthumously dictated by his wife, Jack Herer was born in New York City in 1939.

A military policeman at the time of the Korean War, Jack was no liberal hippy growing up. He was a pro-war republican and cannabis prohibitionist. Even going as far as naming his first son after a conservative senator.

Shortly after moving to LA in 1967, Herer discovered cannabis.

This was also after a divorce, and a woman he had an interest in had goaded him into trying it. This led to a rapid shift in his life, full of reinvention.

After spending a considerable amount of time researching cannabis, Jack became an advocate for the end of prohibition. His public work and speeches helped propel the cannabis movement forward. At 6-feet tall, Jack often wore a wild beard and hemp tie-dye shirt.

One of his biggest successes, Jack Herer was the author of the well-known book called “The Emperor Wears No Clothes.” Released in 1985, the story is set in 1973 and is set as an allegory for the prohibition of cannabis, based on the classic fairy tale, “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

As an activist and author, Herer helped spread the word throughout the United States.

Herer constantly and consistently pushed cannabis legalization, even running for president in 1988 and 1992. Anything he could do to raise his profile and get his message out there.

Herer was an American patriot with the goal of seeing cannabis legalization realized throughout the US and beyond. He was also a proponent of hemp cultivation for industrial use.

Unfortunately, he died from a heart attack in 2010.

The Legacy of Jack Herer

Jack Herer may have died in 2010, but his legacy continues to live on today. The 11th edition of his book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, sold at least 700,000 copies.

Jack never stopped talking about cannabis legalization, even until his death. He was actually serving a small stint in prison when he started writing his magnum opus.

Jack Herer’s legacy lives on in the work he did promoting the end of cannabis prohibition. His efforts helped play a role in the progress of both hemp and cannabis.

Through his activist efforts and the massive success of his books, he helped get the word out about how misunderstood hemp has been.

Looking back, one can see why it was so smart to focus on the industrial utility of hemp to help reduce the fear behind the plant. Countless Americans helped to continue the movement after seeing his tireless efforts.

Unfortunately, Jack never got to see the legalization of hemp

The Emperor of Hemp, as he is often called, had an undeniable impact on the current state of hemp affairs. Jack helped move us toward the 2014 Hemp bill, which legalized industrial hemp in the United States.

We have only begun to see all the beneficial applications of this powerful plant. The downstream creation of jobs and popularity of CBD products may not have happened without Jack’s efforts.

Fortunately, Jack did get to see many US states legalize medical and recreational cannabis. Jack Herer would likely still be fighting for federal legalization if he were still alive.

It’s a comforting thought to believe that Herer would be happy to hear how his legacy lives on, not just through advocacy, but also via his namesake strain.
