Sploof – A Smell-Proof Cannabis Tool

The odour of cannabis is a tell-tale giveaway, but a sploof could be just what you need to avoid drawing unwanted attention to yourself while you medicate.

Whether it’s from a joint, bong, or dab rig, the odour of weed and its derivatives leave a conspicuous smell behind in its wake.

Those more resourceful among us would think to blow and exhale the smoke outside, but that doesn’t mean the wind won’t betray you and blow it right back into your face. You could also avoid smoking inside entirely and head outdoors to finish your smoking session.

However, in the cold, winter months, not many would choose to partake in such a hassle. Hence, for times like these, you need a sploof.

What is a sploof you ask, and why does it sound like a cartoon character from a kid’s TV show?

Today, we will provide some much-needed context surrounding what a sploof is, its purpose, and how to make one for yourself from the comfort of your home.

What is a Sploof?

By definition, a sploof is any device or contraption designed to minimize or mask the smell of cannabis smoke.

If you’ve ever smoked a joint, finished a bowl, or ripped a dab, you’ll know that, often, the smell lingers on your clothes, breath, and your general surroundings long after you’ve finished your session.

With a sploof, these are preventable concerns. Having a sploof at your disposal minimizes the likelihood of the smell of burnt cannabis lingering. A sploof can come in all shapes and sizes.

Depending on your location, you can even purchase a sploof at a dispensary or online retailer where you can buy weed online. That said, not everyone can be so fortunate or will have the affordable income to buy a sploof for themselves.

However, this is not the be-all-end-all solution, and there are methods for making a sploof at home using just a few household materials, which we will outline later on.

But before we get into that, let’s go over why weed smells so pungent in the first place.

Why Does Weed Smell so Strongly?

The cannabis plant, like many other plants, has flowers. To attract pollinators, such as bees, they use special sweet-smelling compounds that draw bees and other insects’ attention.

These compounds are known as terpenes and are present in many other fruits and vegetables we commonly enjoy. What are terpenes, you may ask? They’re organic molecules that specialize in emitting smell.

Many scents we recognize in everyday life, such as the smell of lavender and citrus, are formed by terpenes. These compounds are also found naturally-occurring within the cannabis plant.

If regular flowers can emit a fresh, fragrant smell, then cannabis flowers, too, will emit their own unique fragrance. In this instance, this aroma attracts humans as well as insects.

Additionally, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that when you’re burning and combusting something, there is a chance it won’t smell particularly good. It doesn’t matter if it’s a match, a joint, or a piece of paper. Burning carbon and plant fibre can smell unappealing.

This reason is why burning a joint with its rolling paper and plant matter is an acquired smell, while dabs and hash rips possess a slightly more fragrant aroma.

Before delving into the details surrounding building your own sploof, we will issue a word of warning: The purpose of a sploof’s design is to minimize the smell of cannabis when exhaled.

However, a sploof is not designed to mask the smell of cannabis flower or product you have lying out in the open.

For that, you’ll want to invest in some glass mason jars or a stash box

How to Make a Sploof

Now that we have established what a sploof is and why weed smells, we will delve into the ‘how’ of making one yourself.

If you’re concerned about the degree of difficulty, there’s no cause for alarm. The challenge of making a sploof is so rudimentary that you’ll wonder if such a device would even work.

That said, below, we will outline how you can make a sploof at home using 3 household materials.

Materials:

  • A toilet paper roll
  • Scented dryer sheets
  • Rubber bands (optional)

Instructions:

  1. To start, find an empty toilet paper roll that you have lying around. In the spirit of waste, not, want not, an already-used one is best.
  2. Take a few scented dryer sheets, about 3 or 4, and stuff them into the cavity of the toilet paper roll. The dryer sheets will help to mask the scent of the burnt weed and “clean” it as it travels outwards.
  3. To make your sploof extra scent-proof, take another scented dryer sheet and wrap it around one end of the toilet paper roll. Tie a few rubber bands around it to secure it in place. This extra layer will help your sploof go the distance to prevent any pungent smell from leaking out.
  4. There you have it! A sploof in 3 easy steps.

Everyone should have some toilet paper lying around in their house. However, any cylindrical object that you can blow the smoke from a joint into will work just as efficiently if you don’t.

To maintain the integrity of your sploof and ensure that it’s running at peak performance, be sure to swap out the dryer sheets every so often. Over time, the dryer sheet will collect tar and other weed fume exhaust, minimizing the efficacy.

Sploof – An Easy to Use Odour-Eliminating Tool

Although weed is legal in Canada, many of the general population still have varying degrees of non-acceptance towards cannabis and its smell.

That said, if you’re lucky enough to live in a cannabis-friendly area, it doesn’t mean you should be blowing your weed smoke out of the window or out of the door without regard for your neighbours. A sploof helps you stay discreet, but it also shows respect for those who don’t want to smell the smoke.

Alternatively, if you are concerned about neighbours smelling your weed, you may want to consider switching to a THC vape pen instead. With vape pens, there is no combustion of the plant involved, and no smoke is produced.

Try our Hooti Extracts’ THC Distillate Vaporizer Pen made with our state of the art premium THC distillate accompanied by reintroduced strain-specific terpenes to enjoy your weed discreetly.

We hope this article has helped shed some light on the benefits of having a sploof, and provided you with the courage and knowledge to make one of your own.

The next time someone asks you how to minimize the scent of weed or how to smoke discreetly in your room, you’ll be well prepared.
